Consider the equation H2 + Cl2 --> 2HCl. A student suggests that according to the ratio shown by the coefficients, 20 g of hydrogen will react with 20 g of chloride to form 40 g of HCl. Is the student correct? Explain???

    The student is incorrect because the coefficients present in the chemical equation represent the number of moles, not the number or grams. In reality, one mole of hydrogen will react with one mole of chloride to form 2 moles of HCl. In grams, 2g of hydrogen will react with 70.9 g of chloride to form 36.45 g of hydrochloric acid (using molar mass off of the periodic table).
