How do I convert AVI Video files from my camera into a format my Mac can understand?

I just got a new Macbook and I have a Pentax Optio S6 digital camera. The files were able to save to my computer when I plugged the camera in, however when I click and try to play them, Quicktime says they are not the right format. The files show up as ".avi", so I assume they are AVI files. I would like to be able to edit them on iMovie, but the first step would be making the computer recognize the files!

Helppp ASAP, thank you!

Assuming you are using Windows XP or Vista, you have the Movie Maker program included for free. Usually in the Accessories section of the Start Menu. Start the program, add the "jpg" file (which I suspect is actually mpg as jpg is not a video format), add it to the timeline. Then under the File menu select "Make Movie". When it ask you what format you want to use, save it as an avi.
