anne bradstreet was a puritan woman with strong religious (theocentric) beliefs so her poems are very religious and morally based. This poem particularly is a didactic characteristic of literature during the 17th century. Didactic means instructional & this one is morally instructional....

    ANALYSIS...

One silent night when she went to bed, she wasn't expecting anything out of the normal to happen.

She was then awakened by a loud noise and heard people yelling Fire!

She asked God to get her through this and protect her during this distress/hardship.

She didn't want to be left without any possessions like food, water and necessities(succorless)

Then she saw the fire enflame her entire house and saw all her belongings turn to ash.

She believes that those possessions always belonged to God, never her so he is allowed to take them whenever he pleases so she shouldnt chide(scold) herself.

She then remembers everything that will never happen in her house again. She visits what used to be her house and sees where the old chest used to be and rememberes that she won't have any guests over to eat, or hear a story or anything in that house. She tries to remember what she possibly could have done wrong to deserve everything to be taken away. She then believes that material things really mean nothing at all because she will have everything she needs when she gets to heaven with God.

Anne Bradstreet was a puritan and was supposed to focus on the afterlife (heaven) and not on "riches or worldly goods." In my opinion, she feels guilty that she put so much thought on these worldly goods and not on Jesus Christ. To her they are ill-gotten if she puts them before the Lord. She thinks that God is showing her that she was put things before Him and wants her to focus on Him more than things that won't last.
