gay marriage and proposition 8?
i recently watched some news about proposition 8 in america, from my understanding it stopped gay marriages being legal in carlifornia and it got me thinking if i agreed with gay marriage. dont get me wrong am not homophobic and in fact far from it, i can claim i have gay friends to prove it just like some people claim to have minority friends to prove they are not racist, but that could easily be a lie. now what i can say is that am perfectly happy with people that are gay to have civil unions and domestic patnership, but when it comes to marriage as a christian i do not agree as for that to happen the bible has be rewritten and what kind of message is that sending, what next premarital sex becomes acceptable in the bible because most people in society are promiscuos. people need to understand that religion is not supposed to move with the times or else it just becomes another common institution, religion requires faith and in christianity if gays are allowed to marry what can we say to the man who commits thievery which is also against the bible. dont get me wrong i have no problem with gay people having all the rights as straight people, but gay marriage is against the bible and christianity, now i dont know if there is any religion out there that accepts gay marriage but if they are gay marriage is probably fine under those religions. but not christianity. if u dont think so feel free to mention ur opinions
mr ripley just so u know god gave us free will he also gave us the ten commandments, he also destroyed sodom and gomorra, so am pretty sure the bible does not agree with gay marriage as it says a man should be faithful to his wife (wife!). i also never said that christianity had the monopoly on marriage that is why i said that they are other religions that support gay marriage definetly not the bible or christiamity. on a final note as a christian i follow the new testament not the old testament, i cant remember exactly what part of the bible that jesus gave his own version of the old testament, but iremember him being agaist slavery and women as property, he even allowed women to sit at the same table as him. i never said jesus would turn gays away, but he would certainly not mary the as they are not man and wife. finally i thought civil unions gave gay couples the same right of being next of kin as straight couples.

Marriage was separated from religion a long time ago. If I got married in a church, my church might recognize it, but the state would not. I have to go to the courthouse and get a marriage license. Also, if I don't want to marry in a church, I don't have to. I can get that license and get married at the same time, no church needs to be involved. Therefore, marriage is now a *civil* contract that makes the spouse the "next of kin" according to the *state*, not the church. This is exactly what gay couples want for themselves, and there is no good reason to deny them.

Well, religion MUST be put aside for this. The US is not a theocracy, but a democracy. This is a social, issue, not a religious one. Many Christians act and think that this is some sort of threat to your already faltering religion. The reality is, it isn't.
Marriage predates your religion. Therefore, your religion can NOT claim to hold the monopoly on it. In addition, if marriage was only for the religious or Christian - then explain why atheist get married?!?
Marriage is now, always has been and will continue to be a social contruct. From a social aspect, to deny such persons the same rights that are afforded to another is illegal and morally unjustifiable.
Your religion is only 1 of thousands currently practiced in the world. Only 3 of those multitude of religions actually takes issue with gay people. Yours, being one of them.
I will not get into a religious debate with you, as I see it to be pointless. I know factual information about the innacuracies of your religious text.
It comes down to this:
God granted man FREE WILL to live as MAN sees fit. Good bad right or wrong, it is up to the individual to make the choices for their lives. To create any legislation that would deny someone equal rights based on anothers opinion is wrong. It is the same scenrio that was faced with the Civil Rights movements in the 1960's. The job of the government is to protect all it's citizens, not dictate or regulate "morality".

MaceW: Man made religion, there is only one God. He was not religion, nor was His Son! He gave us the Ten Commandments to follow. No religion can change what God has set as law to be politically correct just to fit their life styles. People choose to live together out of wed lock, just like those who have chosen to live together with the same sex. We can respect that even if we don't agree. The bible tells us to love one another. Jesus would not turn anyone aside, but he will not change His Fathers Laws. Those who claim to serve God in a church that has agreed to change Gods Law, will find God is looking in from the outside, wondering just what God their serving. Good Luck Steve

Gay marriage is against the beliefs of people who interperit the bible, not against all of Christianity. There is a lot of room for interpritation, and many queer people who are good christians, too.
You might want to think through your justification for you beliefs, though. You say you are against premarital sex, but you don't think same-sex marriage should be allowed? That suggests that by your rules gays would have to be celibate, and that doesn't match up at all to you saying that you are accepting of homosexuality. How much sin would it save in your book if we were allowed to marry instead of having to make do with civil partnerships?
You are entitled to your beliefs, but that also has nothing to do with the legalization of same-sex marriage. Civil marriage has nothing to do with the church, and that is what would give us equal rights. If you don't think God recognizes same-sex marriages, that's your thing. But we deserve the right to make that decision for ourselves just like you do.

I would not use the Bible to define marriage:
In the Old Testament, up until Jesus' day, almost all marriages were 'arranged'. The underage child-bride would be sold off to whichever groom would pay the father the highest price, called a dowry. In those days, daughters were considered chattel-pieces of property to be sold or bargained away for the benefit of the father.
Is this the type of biblical marriage you are defending?
Source(s): At least gay marriages are between consenting adults. Biblical marriages involve underage gils married off to much older men, who had the right (read Leviticus) to kill them if they were found not to be virgins. - Anonymous1 decade ago
I won't be mentioning any "opinions" here guy, I will however state a fact. Religion has nothing to do with marriage. The church did not sanction marriage until the 1600's. I am beyond sick and tired of having to expalin that book of fairy tales to you people who claim to be such devout believers of the religion attached to that book. It does not say ANYWHERE in that bible that gay marriage is wrong.
Another thing I'm sick of is people like you saying you "have gay friends" yet you are okay with them being treated like a subspecies.
Know your religion, know your priorities and for fcuk' sake know what you speak.

Homosexuality has been round for so long as Heterosexuality has been round, one intriguing truth to factor out is that earlier than brand new primary religions like Christianity, Roman Catholism, Islam, Buddhism, unfold the world over, so much human cultures and civilizations all over the world had been honestly very tolerant, and accepting of homosexuality, and in a few circumstances a few human cultures they even inspired homosexuality over heterosexuality, actually within the South Pacific: In many societies of Melanesia, principally in Papua New Guinea, identical-intercourse relationships had been an critical facet of the tradition till the center of the 20 th century. The Etoro and Marind-anim for instance, even regarded heterosexuality as sinful and celebrated homosexuality rather. In many conventional Melanesian cultures a prepubertal boy could be paired with an older adolescent who could grow to be his mentor and who could "inseminate" him (orally, anally, or topically, relying at the tribe) over a quantity of years to ensure that the more youthful to additionally succeed in puberty. Many Melanesian societies, nonetheless, have grow to be adversarial closer to identical-intercourse relationships due to the fact the advent of the Religion referred to as Christianity via European missionaries. The brand new and present worldwide homosexual rights motion formally started in lots of methods across the past due Sixties, and that worldwide wrestle for identical rights keeps to nowadays within the yr 2011.
