A lot of material cannot be "Beamed Live" and therefore has to be shot on videotape.
Also, material that is being televised live needs to be recorded for later re-broadcasting and for historical records, therefore the need for videotape and archives.
As a TV news cameraman I have shot material in 1988 ( a mass shooting of people in Melbourne by an individual) or in 1989 of police that were shot dead. These are still being used in news broadcasts as a reminder of what occurred when referring to a current story. Similarly, I occasionally see material I shot as a War Correspondent during the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War that I shot on film that is being rebroadcast.
