How do I get that glass-like furniture high gloss finish on my hardwood floors?

I'm laying unfinished engineered hardwood planks and I am staining them with a walnut Min-wax stain. I want the finish to be so shiny I can see myself in it and I want it smooth as glass. How do I get that finish?

I would stain and sand, and then apply a product from sherwin & williams called Rexane, It is a gym floor finish, sand with a fine paper between coats until you get what you want. It is work, so don't get in a hurry or it will show, take one section at a time when sanding, but put the finish on the entire floor for an even shiny look. Your trim is important too, I think a mirror tile around the base boards would really set the room off.

Before you start working on the floor, I would suggest taking a few pieces of the material and laying out a square a couple of feet on a side on a piece of plywood and then try doing the suggested finish as in answer 1. You will find that "sand, and sand" really means it. You will be using very fine wet or dry black paper and perhaps even rotten stone and applying thin layers of finish and sanding again.

You might look up 'piano finish' on the Internet. I redid the bench for my wife's piano that was in horrible shape as it had been used for holding plants that leaked. When done the finish was identical to the undamaged piano, but it took hours of work and days of drying, and that was only about 18" by 30".

And a very high polish finish will show scratches - are you going to require guests and yourself to wear gym shoes or slippers like the Japanese? The super high polish floors using in dance production numbers require a lot of maintenance, waxing, and polishing.

I like this, Delbert just peed on someones shoe toss another log on the fire, darlin, and sit down and enjoy some fine wine (home made) by the the flames...and lets read a little poetry. Poetry is in the eye of the beholder and it does not have to be stuffy and proper to sing.
