Yes, the pens work. I've tried Idol White and I love it. I bought mine online through this site:

I took the authors suggestion and keep the leftovers in my purse and use it after I drink cola. Awesome idea!

Actually, the Listernine Whitening Rinse works! (Though, it tastes TERRIBLE.) The pens can often look splotchy if you aren't careful. The Listerine Whitening will do an overall lightening-it won't work as brilliantly as the strips or a trip to the dentist, but it will be a natural kind of white.
