Where can I get free yarn?
I'm a college student and I love crocheting in my free time, unfortunately I don't have much money to spend on yarn. Is there anywhere I can get free yarn or get some for really cheap?

Try the thrift store. They usually have really crappy yarn that someone donated in bulk for like 2 dollars a bag.The bags are usually like 6 skeins or so , at least around where I live.If there is a walmart near you or a Michaels, They sell Caron Simply Soft for about $2.50 and for the price you get about 360 yards, depending on the type. Some of their yarns have less. It's a pretty good deal!If you want something soft, there is the Baby Bernat they have...but it only comes in whites, pinks, yellows and other pastel baby colors. Aunt Lydia crochet thread is extremely cheap at a dollar or so? and it lasts forever. It's really thin so you use it for doilies and jewelry, mostly.I get all my stuff at walmart and I don't go to any yarn stores EVER.I absolutely despise local yarn shops because they are extremely over priced. If I have to get a nicer yarn or a wool(Caron is acrylic) I go to Michaels when they have a sale on Paton's Wool.

Another idea is to go to a thrift store and get sweaters that you like the color of and the yarn in them. Then take them apart and re use the yarn. You can even ask friends or relatives if they have sweaters they never wear any more or don't like and salvage the yarn. You can google for how to recycle sweaters for the yarn and you will find several sites that show you how to do it step by step. I don't recommend black ones though because they can be horrid to take apart very easy.
I have gotten over 100 sweaters, afghans and scarves over the years and re-cycled the yarn for projects. Got everything from mohair to angora to cashmere for a dollar or so and now at our local one here they give away sacks full for free every so often because they just don't have the room to store things that don't sell right away.
We don't have Craig's list or freecycle within 100 miles so have to find free stuff whatever way I can.

Freecycle!! Find your local Freecycle network online, place a want ad... wait for someone to respond and then arrange to pick it up. Everything has to be free. Some people have a lot of leftover yarn and Freecycle it.
Give you an idea of how sometimes you hit paydirt.... several people wanted fabric scraps. I was moving. Each person received 2 garbage bags filled with my fabric scraps that I didn't want to take with me when I moved. They got what they wanted and I had less stuff to take with me.

You can put an ad on Craigslist. Go to a thrift store, they usually have great prices on them, yard sales are also good. That's all I can think to suggest.
