The 2006 launch models 20GB and 60GB were near 100% BC and later in 2007 there was an 80GB that also played PS2 games albeit limited because it used a software emulator program !
To find a BC PS3, you will need to buy a used PS3 from EB Games or Game Stop ! Do not buy used a PS3 from places like Ebay or Craigslist because you never know what kind of abuse it has sustained and you wouldn't get a warranty !
I believe EB Games and Game Stop offers warranties on their used consoles !
So in short make sure the PS3 has 4 USB slots because the 20, 60 and 80GB BC models all had 4 USB slots !
Here's a list of the model numbers with BC !
20GB Model Number: CECHB01
60GB Model Number: CECHA01
80GB Model Number: CECHE01

The launch versions of the PS3 (20 gig and 60 gig) are fully backwards compatible with all PS2 software. Both models contain the Emotion Engine chip from the PS2.
The 80 gig version (original design) is partially backwards compatible. It uses software emulation instead of the Emotion Engine chip found in the PS2, so there can be problems with some games.
All versions after the original design 80 gig versions, including the new PS3 Slims, are not backward compatible at all.
All versions are fully PS1 compatible.
To find a backward compatible model, you would have to visit a reseller carrying one of the older models or try an auction site, such as ebay.

They used to make them... but only briefly... the 20 and 60 gig versions during Launch when they first came out, and the 80 GIG MGS4 Version I think...
the general rule of thumb is if it has 4 usb ports it is backwards compatible if it has two it's not
and you have Very limited places you can get one...
but your best bet is probably to look to see if you can find a used one on Amazon (which has a pretty good satisfaction guaranteed policy for their Amazon marketplace) eBay or Craigslist.
