Weaving in ends in crochet, think I've been doing it wrong?

I've been almost randomly weaving the ends in and out of some of the nearby stitches, but sometimes you can still see the tails, or I worry they will come out. Also, I made a hat for a friend, who showed it to her friend who crochets, and that person said I wasn't doing the ends right. I know it's hard to explain in print, but if anyone has any hints I'd love to hear them. Or if you know of a good picture/video tutorial?

Thanks!

Your question was interesting to me, because my ends pop out too, so I was wondering. I just purchased the book "The Crochet Answer Book" and I looked up what they say.

They say to leave 6 inch tail or more if your yarn is slippery. Use a tapestry needle and weave the ends in the backside of your piece in a diagonal fashion. So, have the wrong side of the hat facing you and weave into the back of the stitches on a diagonal. (like diagonal from row to row), and then turn and go back up one row away, again on a diagonal.

They added that with slippery yarns or with certain projects you might want to choose to use a little bit of fabric glue on the tip of the yarn when you are done to secure it. But you need to be careful and test it first. They also said you could use matching thread and sew the tip of the yarn in place so that it doesn't come undone.

By the way, I really like that little book. Bought it on Amazon. Good luck. Thanks for the question because I was doing it wrong too.

Usually when I weave in the ends with crochet, knit or cross-stitch, I weave it in and then reverse it as I feel that way it will not come loose. With the crochet it is a little harder so I try to go down a couple of rows to try to hide the "tail" if it should decide to be seen.
