What you do is your choice. If you want him back, keep talking to him casually and see where it leads, that's all you really can do.

You also need to realize what went wrong. If he was an ***, you probably don't want him back. I was in a situation like that where my boyfriend was a jerk, broke up with me and would constantly come back and start talking to me even though he was the one to call it off. I wanted him back and it took a long time before I realized what a jerk he was.

This was 4 years ago and he still tries to come back and talk to me everyone once in a while. At some point you just got to break any connection you have or you will have a LOT of trouble getting over him.

You need to work out if he is worth it. Actually sit down and go through all the good and bad things about this guy.

Ask yourself why he broke up with you and whether it was a legitimate reason. If it was your fault, do you have what it takes to fix it and make your relationship work a second time around?

Though it sounds as if he regrets it as much as you do so I think you should communicate with him and discuss what broke you apart. Do not stay with him if he left you for another woman or has ever hurt you in any way.

Text him back. And find out whether it's just a friendly text or whether he wants you too.

If he says he misses you say you miss him too. But don't be the first to say it unless it's totally obvious. That can leave you out to rejection.
