You will probably never be completely free of anxiety. I've dealt with it my whole life.
My suggestions: Instigate small talk. Ask people about their day, talk about the weather, whatever your comfortable with. It doesn't have to be an in depth conversion, but over time, it makes you a little bit more confidant. This small talk can sometimes lead to a lengthy conversation and ultimately friendships.
The tendency is to become introverted and avoid social situations all together, so just get out of the house as often as you can. Go to places where you feel comfortable even if it's by yourself, but try to go with good friends or family. I go to movies and museums.
When you have some confidence, force yourself into situations that you know will make you feel uncomfortable. Get involved in activities that force you to be social like sports, theater, debate, whatever your interested in.
The fact that you want to be more social means that it will happen. You just have to slowly overcome your fear. It will take time. Good luck.

Go to the school drama department & volunteer as a stage hand. It's a great way to stay busy with a group & focus on development of social skills as well as nurture a personality in a creative environment!

find a friend that will join u, try not 2 be alone
start off with going 2 a popular park, making conversations about the scenery

well buddy, go to a subway or gas station, and progress your conversations with the attendants/sandwich artists.
If you see a car you like, tell the guy its a nice car.
If you see a girl you like, wait until you're social anxiety is better :)
If you see a shirt you like, etc
good luck.
p.s. ask people for advice/directions

the public library. there you can be around other people without really having to interact with them. also, some of them are kind of strange, so you don't have to feel inadequate with your social skills. you'll be heads and tails better than them. it will be a wonderful self-confidence booster.
