Question about a PS3?

I have my PS3 hooked up via the HDMI cable. Is it OK(meaning will it not damage anything)to hook up AV cables also?I want to run the audio to my surround sound system.I wasn't sure if you could use both the HDMI and AV at the same time.I don't want to find out the hard way that it is a no no.Any help would be appreciated.

Update:

I need the HDMI to the tv for the blu ray discs.I need AV cables because that is the only kind of input/outputs my surround sound system supports. All I need to know is if it will hurt my playstation if I hook up HDMI and AV at the same time.

Update 2:

The only thing I have hooked to my TV right now is the HDMI cable and the out to TV from my satellite reciever.

i have hdmi to plasma and optical to surround sound amp and it works very well.

I have to do it this way as my TV has no speakers.

Has been running this way for 3- months, no problems.

seem to remember there was a bit of setting up on the PS3 (is in the manual).

sounds great !! and helps in some of the games !

As far as i know HDMI carries both video and audio signals. So hook that up. Then your TV should have audio out, which is just the red and white cables of the three AV cables, and it should say buy the inputs/outputs if it is out. so run the audio cables from the output of your television to the input of you surround system. If that doesn't work i'm sure a quick call Best Buy or the like would save you some trouble.

Run audio out from tv to reciever not ps3 or use fiber optic from ps3 to reciever if your ss takes fiber optic audio.
