What hotel has the best location in Hawaii to Wakiki Beach?

I am off to Oahu Hawaii in March 2010 and am trying to find a hotel that is in the best location for Wakiki beach. I have heard there are some differences from North to South of Wakiki. I basically want to be with all the action but also in the best location for the beach.

If anyone knows the street names that are near the best part of the beach that would help a great deal!

Also if anyone has any views on better areas to stay (In Oahu ONLY) that they could recommend that would be great.

Please don't say look of Trip Advisor either as this just reviews the hotels and doesn't tell me about the location so much.

Looking forward to some good advice my TA! Friends. :) xxx

Kalakaua Avenue is the main street along the beach in Waikiki, it runs east to west, not north to south. There are also hotels on the far western edge of Waikiki along Ala Moana Blvd (the Hilton Hawaiian Village for instance), but the main central and eastern portions of Waikiki is along Kalakaua Avenue. Beachfront resorts are totally dominated by Starwood Resorts (Sheraton, Westin), Hilton, and Outriggers. There is one 5-star resort called the Halekulani (but it has no beach directly in front of it, and is also a bit far to the west).

The Starwood hotels line the beach in central Waikiki, anchored by the Royal Hawaiian hotel, and they just remodeled the street access to the hotel, looks fantastic (used to be hidden by the shopping mall in front of it). The Moana Surfrider is also part of the Starwood chain, is the last hotel going east directly on the beach. Both of these hotels are historic and the first hotels in Waikiki and as you can imagine are on the best part of the beach. Both of these hotels are highly recommended.

The Sheraton Waikiki (also part of the Starwood chain!) is adjacent to the Royal Hawaiian (going west), and the Outrigger(s) and Halekulani are adjacent to the Sheraton (going west) but I do not like this part of Waikiki Beach, they really overbuilt it and I find it a bit claustrophobic. Going east, beyond the Moana Surfrider, the beach runs directly alongside Kalakaua Ave. and there are no hotels between the street and beach...the hotels are all across the street. I like this area of Waikiki because it doesn't feel so closed-in when you are sitting on the beach and the street sidewalk which runs along the beach is a great people-watching area.

If these are a bit pricey for you and you are trying to get within a specific budget, the Park Shore is further east from the Moana Surfrider, directly across the street from the beach on one side and Kapiolani Park on the other, but it is in the area where there are no hotels on the beach side of the street, so you will most likely get an ocean view from your room. The location is PERFECT and the hotel is clean with good service...it is an older hotel and needs an overhaul but the price is amazing.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is a great bustling resort, but is a bit out of the central action because it is on the extreme western edge of Waikiki...the good thing is if you like shopping and that is a priority, the main shopping mecca Ala Moana Shopping Center is a 10 minute walk going west. Most of the shopping in Waikiki itself are designer boutiques (Hermes, Chanel, Ferragamo, etc.) catering to international visitors so if you want "normal" shopping the Ala Moana Center is your best bet.

I went last March to Waikiki and we stayed at the Waikiki Sunset. It was really nice and walking distance from Safeway for groceries (about 20 min), the beach, theres one end which isn't the best for swimming but is really quiet or you can go to the other end where it's pretty busy but is a good swimming location. Either side is about a 5 min walk max. It's really close to the market where they sell jewellery and such(about 10 min walk), theres a bus stop really close that takes you to pearl harbour, 2 different malls and where ever else you want to go. It's also basically across the street from the aquarium and the zoo if you're interested in that. All around there are shops and clothes stores, all sorts of restaurants bars and such really close. You aren't right in the centre, but really close to, the Waikiki night life. You seriously are really close to everything with this hotel. Have fun! I had a great time in Waikiki!

I believe that hotel is in Kalia street... Theres not really many hotels in the north shore but it is beautiful there too... theres like bigger waves!... but from waikiki to the north shore is only like 40-45 minutes!... well whatever you do just have fun!... which im sure you are...

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
