1. Two mad scientists are planning a trip to Mars. Professor White tells Professor Brown - "WE DONT NEED SO MUCH FUEL FOR THE RETURN TRIP - THE ROCKET WILL HAVE LESS MASS ON MARS.

On Mars, Professor Brown weighs the fire extinguisher. The scales read 1.9kg. Calculate the ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY on Mars.

1) mass is not dependent on the acceleration of gravity of a planet, therefore the rocket does not have less mass on Mars compared to what it would have on earth.
(ie mass is constant regardless of location) ANS
2) weight of fire extinguisher on Earth = 50 N
mass of fire extinguisher = 50/9.81 = 5.1 kg
weight of fire extinguisher on Mars = the weight equivalent of a 1.9 kg mass
If the mass of the extinguisher = 5.1 kg but it appears to have a weight of a 1.9 kg mass then the acceleration of gravity of Mar is:
a = 1.9/5.1 x g = 0.3725 x 9.81 = 3.65 m/s² ANS

1. - no - going and coming from mars you'll have to both accelerate and deaccelerate the space ship - this will take the same amount of fuel coming and going.
2. I'm afraid I'm not much good with calculating anything. you'd have "less weight" on Mars as there is less mass and therefore less gravity.
