DVD-ROM issues on a brand new computer running Windows 7?

I just got a brand new computer for my birthday and it's lovely except that the DVD-ROM drive doesn't seem to be working quite right. It will read discs and install games but will not run the games once installed. When I double click on the icon to start games, the DVD-ROM doesn't even attempt to read the disc. For example, I double clicked a shortcut for a game I knew needed the disc to run but I also didn't put in. It never told me that the disc wasn't present or anything. What do I do? Please help!

Update:

Just to be clear, this is not just one program, it's multiple. The DVD-ROM is allowing installation and functioning great for reading discs but will not initiate for a program that requires a disc to run.

The disc drive might be dirty or it might need to be replaced...if your computer is still under warranty take it in...I had a similar problem when I bought my newest computer I was lucky it was still under warranty and they replaced the drive for me
