End of an era - Jumps racing to finish in Victoria at the end of the 2010 season?
Today the RVL annouced that jumps racing will no longer occur in Victoria after the end of the 2010 season. They will have some high weight races on during the 2011 season to help Jockey's, Trainers and Horses with the transition. The RVL board says that they do not want the industry to suffer from a knee-jerk ban in the furture and they are better off beginning with a transition now. The decision comes after the 2009 season was marred by many deaths.
Well we were hoping that this would never happen, but in a way I am not surprised. The sad thing is that flat racing in the U.S has more deaths than jumps racing in Australia!
I'm going to try and not get started on a rant right now, but this really is a sad day for Australia, RVL have made so many mistakes and this is how it has ended.
So what are your thoughts?
Fuji - It is people like you who have ruined this sport for us! Firstly the biggest mistake that was ever made was making the jumps smaller, this made the races faster and gave us more accidents. If you actually knew anything about horse racing and if you actually loved horses you would know and understand how terrible of a day this is. There are much worse sports out there.
Only way to make things better is to find pleanty of winners for today!
There is an annual meeting on Wednesday, and the AJRA have said that they will do whatever it takes to turn this decision around. Although we have no idea how this will turn out we know that the RSPCA are now moving onto 2 year old racing.
What a tough year for racing in Australia, wagering, whips and jumps. Well it certainly isn't going to end any time soon.

It really makes me wonder what sort of agenda the RVL have. I wouldn't rule out a legal fight and a turnaround.I guess we will have to see what ensues in the coming months.

I agree with most things you say Jess but i was never a fan of the 'jumps' racing, not only is it hard on the horses but its almost impossible to back a winner. The only people i see losing are the Bookmakers.I wonder what will happen to the Grand National the centrepiece of the Jumps racing in England? The race where usually half the field doesn't finish? Is that cruelty to animals?

john wheeler a new zealand trainer who also races jumpers in australia as well, said.
if they ban jumping races, close to 400 horses each year will be sold as pet food, only a small number make it to win money on the flat , the rest can be sorted to jump and out of those a lot are successful.
n.z still has a jumping season from may to september.
also he said the jumps were made to easy for horses, they went to fast ,hence the injuries

A very sad page in the chronicle of Australian racing. It was the last bastion of true distance horse racing left. No one is interested is staying types in Oz any more and it is to our detriment.
You can rant your f'n head off Jess, I'm with you and I'm f'n spewing.
I'd point back to what I said here-
