Braces question, and teeth whitening?
I have been wearing braces 7 months and i just want general advice, should i brush my teeth 3 times a day (I currently do it twice), should I use a waterpick (I can't floss for obvious reasons), i am always paranoid about my teeth and the condition they are in. I stopped drinking soft drinks reguarly, and i drink water almost all the time so they will be no damage by the soft drinks i did consume previously will there (I brushed my teeth twice a day every day). So am I maintaining good oral hygiene for braces?
Also, after i get my braces off im thinking of having my teeth whitened (my teeth colour annoys me), I live in Australia (but methods can apply worldwide), and what is the most durable way to do it, and what is the longest period it will last, also how much would it cost, and I would prefer to see a dentist so they can recommend the type of whitening to me which suits me 100% and is applicable to me, will that be okay? Thanks for answering such a long question.

By having braces, you obviously care about your teeth and your smile. That is important for so many reasons, including your ability to take care of them while they are undergoing the straightening process. I would suggest you brush your teeth 4 times a day, and more if you eat a lot of snacks. First thing in the morning, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner and just before bed. If you are unable to brush your teeth because no sink is available, take advantage of chewing a carrot stick that naturally clears out any sugary substance and will be a healthy snack to boot!
I am familiar with these questions as I too have had the same 'dilemma'. Here is what I was told by my dentist and representatives from several (I shopped around) tooth whitening companies:
1) A residual glue that you cannot see nor can dentists/orthodontists remove by simple polishing of the teeth after the braces are removed can remain on the surface of the teeth for up to four weeks after the braces are removed. If whitening is attempted before all of the glue comes off naturally, the potential for 'spots' or streaking on the teeth from uneven whitening increases. Therefore, I would suggest a minimum of three to four weeks before I would use any type of strong whitening outside of toothpaste.
2) Despite all of the RELATIVELY expensive tooth whitening toothpastes on the market, you can use a simple home remedy of baking soda on your toothbrush after regular brushing. This works as good, if not better than a toothpaste, and is cheaper. It does not taste great though. The problem with the 'painted on' whiteners is that they do not last very long, and over the long haul, they will cost A LOT to maintain. The alternatives to bright white from Target or Wal-mart are effective, but do not last nearly as long as those that you can buy from your dentist (Brite White and Zoom). While these are significantly more expensive than store brands, they will last one to two years without outside maintenance, and they are more effective. You could also do an in-office whitening which speeds up the whitening process (1 afternoon vs. 2 to 3 weeks with Bright White), and costs roughly the same.
Toothpastes merely remove surface stains like coffee/smoke/food from chronic build-up over the years, and only work to 'whiten' them close to back to where they were before, but Zoom or BriteWhite will whiten them well beyond what you can get from a toothpaste or naturally.

You could do tooth whitening if you found a tray style product that will go over the braces. The cement keeping the braces on actually keeps that area decay free and stain free. It is the rest of the area that will get stained by drinks, food, smoking and wine. Yes, the best is to brush, floss (if you got that fancy floss for braces) and swish. You will still likely have some colour difference when they come off but your ortho will get the cement off. The yellow people are saying about is bc their friends probably have un maintained "clear braces"

Well, keep up the good hygene. Soda's and things of "dark" in nature like GRAPE Juice, Pepsi, tea and dark red wine can discolor your teeth.
If you ask your dentist about teeth whitening, they will recomend something in their office. Their not going to recommend something other than "their products". That's how they stay in business.
In the United States, we can buy a box of Crest White Strips off the grocery counter. They cost around $35 or so, and they really work. Well, I think if your average.
Also, heres a great trick that doesnt cost anything and IT WORKS !
*Try brushing your teeth with any tooth paste.......dip your tooth brush in a box of "baking soda" and do it a couple of times. Its pretty gross, but its a soft abrasive and a cleaner. Then rinse and gargle and swish your mouth with "Hydrogen Peroxide" ( in the brown bottle) DO NOT SWALLOW !
It will act like a bleaching agent and also is good for cuts or scratches in the mouth (antisecptic )
NOTE* If you notice your mouth getting sentive, discontinue use and wait a couple of days.
I can easily do this treatment twice a week. I was doing it every day and noticed my mouth getting sensitive.
IT REALLY WORKS and its safe and natural and most likely you have it in the house.
I have done dentist bleaching, which was costly and I was sensitive to the bleaching agents. I got these shocking sensations in my teeth and hated to wait one hour and had to wait another hour with no eating or drinking.
I have also tried this costly product called "GO SMILE" and OMG! wow ! that made my teeth as white as paper ! Awsome ! I got it at a store that sells cosmetics and perfumes called ULTA.
I have also tried the product CREST WHITE STRIPS. Yes they worked very well.
Good luck :)
I too wore braces for 6 years till I was in 12th grade. And wore them again for 2 yrs when I was 26.
I drank coffee, tea, soda and what ever I got my hands on. My teeth were YELLOW !
And now they are super white. Use the baking soda daily and rinse with hydrogen like 2x's/week

I have braces and brush my teeth twice a day. I still drink soft drinks but i don't really drink tea. I think your are maintaining oral hygiene very nicely but I think you can still drink soft drinks. I am not so sure about the whitening part. Just never ever do it when you have your braces!
Have fun!

well i have braces and there is something that the orathadontist tought me. teeth are not naturally pure white. they gave me a floride rinse and when i use it my teeth get darker. your teeth seem really healthy you dont need and really shouldnt whiten them. but i get it, people today think teeth should be bright white even when you can have oral hygene as good as yourse and your teeth are off white. what im trying to say is your very clean and should only whiten if you really need to or a special occasion

Well, I can't say much for tooth whitening. I suggest you ask your dentist. He or she is likely to know what'll work for you.
As for your teeth and hygiene; it seems good enough for me, though I've gotten into the habit of brushing after every meal(if I can). Too much gets stuck for me to ignore it.
