First shot at the ACT - 27 score?
I didn't study at all for the ACT that I took this October. I just wanted to see where I'm at. I definitely want to try again and I'm aiming for at least a 30. I don't really understand how ACT scores should be viewed and judged - should I be happy with my score? Is it possible to improve by 3+ points, or do people generally get the same scores when they retake the test? School is important to me and I want to go to a top university or possible an IVY League school.

To judge an ACT score, look at the national percentile of the score and how good the score is for the colleges you wish to apply to. The national percentiles are here: http://www.actstudent.org/scores/norms1.html
I think you should be very content seeing as you did way better than most people without even studying. A 27 isn't ivy league level yet, but it's very close.
A 3 pt boost on the ACT isn't easy, but it's definitely not too hard either. It's very reasonable if you practice and read through some prep books, especially if you haven't done any ACT prep before. Also, be sure to focus on your weak areas. For someone your level, I do not recommend a prep class. Just don't procrastinate.
Best of luck. Gratz on your score :)

Definitely. The first time I took the ACT I got a 31. The second time I got a 33 [almost a 34 :( ]. If you didn't study, you did pretty well. For the next test, you should buy a book with a lot of practice tests (I bought a Princeton Review Book). The first time I took the test, I couldn't finish the reading or science section, so my score suffered as a result. After I learned how to speed read and did lots of practice tests, I got a great score. Since you have a 27, you have more room to improve and can possibly get my score if you study hard enough. Good luck!

for some reason there is a huge emphasis on your act score, probably the one test you want as high a score as you can get, besides maybe the mcat for premeds. They say your score will likely not change after three attempts at the act, but I would keep paying for retakes until you're satisfied. A 30 is a good bet.

I also got a 27 without studying. But I didn't think to study and take it again. Congrats on your score! I know I'm late, but I wish you the best of luck. If only I knew what I know now, I may have been better off.

ACT scores are the most important factor when colleges are deciding whether or not they want you, or think you're good enough. I would definitely try again, you could very well reach a 30 or above.
