Laptop recovery cds vs recovery consoles?
Last night i got a pretty nasty virus on my laptop, so I ran my antivirus program. Like the dummy that i am, i deleted all files that had viruses in it, which in turn deleted a lot of my registry files and other important operating system files. So, i used the built in recovery console on my hp compaq laptop. It formatted fine, but when attempting to reinstall windows it gave me some fatal error that setup can't continue because registry files were missing or something of that sort.
I then called HP, and they said they would send me the recovery cd. My question is what are the chances that it was just my recovery console files that were damaged, and that the recovery cd they send me will work fine, or am i totally screwed?

Recovery CDs should do it as they dont take notice of anything already on the pc they will wiipe it all off. aslong as they are the correct CDs for your laptop it should all be up and running once you use them.

Using the recovery console is a chore for most people. Chances are it is not the recovery console files that are messed up, it IS actually portions of the registry that has been corrupted. Using the recovery console has been known to cause this problem as well.
If you got an error that registry files were missing while trying to reinstall Windows, chances are they were the files that Windows Setup needed in order to check the installed version and delete/recopy those files.
There are a couple possible solutions:
1) Reboot and repeatedly press either F8 or the Delete button as it is booting. On the menu, choose the one that says to use the Last Known Good Configuration.
If you have another computer that you can use online and that will burn a disk .img file, go to
go down the page to where it says "Select a version:" and just choose the "Download" for v10.1 + Keyboard Patch.
Download that file, extract it to your computer, follow any instruction it has to apply the keyboard patch and create a disk.
Boot the computer with that disk and select to load the "Windows MiniXP".
MiniXP looks exactly like normal Windows XP but will boot a dead computer and in it are options to use the System Restore.
Simply take the system back to before you got the virus and then you can clean it properly (if it is even still there after a restore).

Wow it's a bit dramatic! Firstly it's doubtful your anti virus would have let you delete important system files, did it not just transfer into virus vault? Was this a scan from startup? If you were running a scan from within Windows it would have refused any system files as they would have been in use.
That's all by the by now. Have you got rid of the virus at this point? In other words does the virus check give all clear? If so do you have a Windows disk? You can repair your Windows installation using this and without losing all files by booting from it and selecting recovery console and then selecting the existing Windows install, then typing 'chkdsk/r' (without the commas). If no Windows disk there should be an option in that HP recovery to just reapply a built-in image and this will restore the laptop to the sales condition. For future reference when you pick up a virus - search the internet for the error it gives you (especially on the web site for your anti-virus) and have a look for some anti-spyware stuff out there.

You are totally screwed.
Just Kidding!
Actually, don't bother with the recovery console. The Recovery CD's should restore your machine back to the way it was before. I hope my answer helped and I hope your computer gets restored fine.
Oh, don't forget to format again before using the recovery cd's.
