they both have 19 protons
neutral atoms of both have 19 electrons
K-39 has 20 neutrons (39-19 = 20)
K-40 has 21 neutrons (40-19 = 21)
************
two or more atoms are isotopes if they same number of protons and different numbers of neutrons. ie. different atomic masses.
element.. protons... neutrons..
A...... ........79...... .....197-79 = 118
B...... ........34..... ......79-34 = 45
C...... ........19..... ......40-19 = 21
D...... ........18..... ......40-18 = 22
E....... .......19..... .......39-19 = 20
F....... ........6....... ......14-6 = 8
G...... .........7...... .......14-7 = 7
H...... .........6....... .......12-6 = 6
elements C and E are isotopes.. they have the same # protons and differernt # neutrons
elements F and H are isotopes...they have the same # protons and differernt # neutrons
