What do you write in a personal statement?

I'm trying to finish my college applications, and a lot of the VIP and Priority Applications I received require a personal statement. I'm confused about what this means. Should I write about myself, or should I tell a story as in most of my other applications. They don't require them to be long, less than 300 words. Would one of the following topics be appropriate:

*Why I want to study engineering.

*My lesson on perseverance with my experiences on my high school swimming team.

*Why I want to go to that school.

I prefer not to use the last one considering the fact that I am trying to send every school the same essay.

Can someone clarify everything for me?

A personal statement can be about anything related to you. The school is trying to see your personality through your writing. Whatever you write about, make your personality show (anecdotes are often a good thing to use).
