I just bought windows 7 because I could not remove the virus on windows xp called "antivirus pro". Some have suggested to purchase spydoctor but i decided to buy windows 7 which works fine so far.

Am I going to be at risk to get the same virus? What is a good free antivirus program for windows 7?

Thanks

Update:

Symantec did not say that it will affect windows 7.

See system affected on the following website

    http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup....

    IE7 pro can block pop-ups

    http://www.ie7pro.com/

Also install web of trust for additional Internet Security, Web Of Trust can block potentially harmful websites

    http://www.mywot.com/

A good free antivirus program for windows 7 is

    Microsoft Security Essentials

    http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

It is free, and fully functional forever.

AVG will not prevent you from getting a virus. AVG is nothing but a scanner. It doesn't run in real time. It has no real time protection. Neither does it have root kit protection. AVG 9.0 is said to have it but when i beta tested it, It was just as sorry as it ever was. All AVG will do is make a piss poor attempt at cleaning your machine AFTER it's infected. It's to late then.

The only AV that will protect your computer in real time is Kaspersky internet security. You can't get something for nothing. If you do don't expect much. Get rid of the tool bars. There nothing but low level spyware. Everytime you use the tool bar you are doing nothing but letting Google/Yahoo/ AVG know where your going. Before long you will be getting ads. The best pop up blocker come from firefox. Download firefox with the ad block pro add on. No more pop ups, no more ads. Make sure you have ALL your patches and fixes for windows 7 from the Microsoft update site.

OK, Clarify a little here. There are others out there that are free that have real time protection. The thing is each one is missing something in the free version.

Avast, No heuristics. Without it you are a sitting duck just waiting to get hit.

Avira, It has problems updating. Sometimes it just refuses to. It also has problems with faults positives. All free AV's have problems. They may have one thing but there lacking something important someplace else.

You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:

    1. Virus-check your data files (not application files-- you have installer CDs for those).

    2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.

    3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.

    4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.

    5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.

    6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.

    7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.

    8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.

    9. Reinstall your data files.

    10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.

Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.

So, what do you do in the future?

    1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.

    2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.

    3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.

    4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.

    5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.

    6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.

    7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.

Please adhere to the 'dont's' I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.

    Good luck!

This particular malware should be removed as soon as it has been detected.

As with many rogue applications, Antivirus System Pro is designed to coerce money from unsuspecting computer users, and should therefore NOT be trusted!

Instead, I suggest you check out the link below – here you will find information on how to rid your system of this dubious security tool.

Get rid of AVG. It's not very good at all. And ignore the remark about the only real time scanner being Kaspersky. Kaspersky is neither free, nor is it the only real-time scanner. You can get just as good for nothing...

I do agree about getting rid of the toolbars. I'd stick with one at most, if you can't bring yourself to get rid of them completely, and just use it for mail and IM or whatever.

I personally use these on my computers:

avast! - anti-virus (Avira is good as well)

PC Tools Firewall - firewall (I like Zone Alarm better, but the free version isn't available for Windows 7, yet)

    MalwareBytes - anti-malware (on-demand only)

    Spybot S&D - anti-spyware (on-demand only)

SuperAntiSpyware - anti-spyware (on demand only)

AVG should be fine for blocking viruses. Windows has a "Security Essentials" program on their site you can download for free. Tech sites have said it has done a fine job at blocking many viruses. You might want to install it.

It only effects the Windows 7 partition as Windows code cannot run on Mac OSX.

The best anti-virus is you. Don't click on advertisements (make sure what your clicking on isn't an ad) or go to untrusted porn sites (stick to streaming sites). I haven't used an anti-virus in 3 years and I haven't picked up a virus in that time. For popup blockers just use FireFox as your web browser and get the AdBlockPlus plugin and the other blockers recommended.

Agreed AVG has a free version, also if you want spyware protection i would pick up spybot search and destroy. As far as it goes with pop up blockers, replace your IE with firefox
