Modern Greek Literature. Can we share our opinions and offer some food for thought? STRATH MYRIBILH No. 1?

In an attempt to practise what I have been preaching and to realize an idea which keeps returning,

I shall attempt to produce a weekly question on some of the foremost modern Greek writers. (Not

in any order of greatness or preference). There has always been information posted about Ancient

Greek Literature, but I have not seen anything about Modern Works, which is an enormously rich

category.

I hope that this will be a supplement to Music Mondays.

So, Strath Myribilh is the first on whom I hope we shall focus.

1) This being the Greek Section: "Ap' thn Ellada" ("From Greece"): Which chapters express you best or are your favourites, and why?

Mine have to be the first chapters on Crete, Sfakia, and which mention our family. The historical pictures drawn are amazingly clear through his attention to description of detail.

2) Which of his works have your read and which is your favourite? Why?

3) Which of his characters in which book do you remember clearly, and why?

4) What is your opinion of his writing style?

5) Any thoughts about this writer and/or his work?

6) For those who do not read Greek, which of his books have been translated into other languages,

and which languages. ISBN Numbers if available would be helpful to would-be readers.

Update:

Thankyou both for your answers.

Min, I will try to find ISBN Nos for some

of his books--mine are a bit old. I am

sure you would enjoy them.

Ap'Tin Ellada is my favorite of his. In fact it is one of my favorite Greek books of alll time. I love his style of writing, his eloquence, his use of the language.

All the chapters are good, but the first one really got me hooked. I've read the book twice, but I have read that first chapter about 10 times.

I read his so called trilogy, Liapkin - Chimaira - Yougerman, but a long time ago I must admit. I love " Sintagmatarhis Liapkin ". Perhaps because it's all about the place I was born and live, Larisa and Thessaly. His descriptions are so familiar to me, and a way to imagine about life in Larisa of the time. The Agricultural School ( Γεωργική Σχολή ) that is mentioned in the book, is a place where as a child I used to go for small excursions, either with the school (Dimotiko) or family. There is a small forest right next to the School ideal for picnics and playing. The old School buildings are still there, so the set of the book is still alive in a way. I haven't been there for years now, but memory serves me well. And when you are a kid, memories are more vivid. I like his writing style. I like the "Generation of the 1930" authors as we call them, like Venezis and Mirivilis.
