"Let all your things be done with charity." II Corinthians 16:14

  • Could someone please quote the poem "Connie" by Nikki Giovanni for me?

I have searched and found three parts of this poem (twenty-three lines in all) but am not sure if this is the complete work or if this is the correct order?

    "quiet ...

like a quilt on a feather bed .. to "that we don't care

    we smile" (8 lines)

    and

    "quiet ...

like the sound of a cumulous cloud floating by .." to "the cream to peak at its whipping...

the idea that will make it alright" (9 lines)

    and

    "quiet ...

like a blue sky on a summer day ..." to " just walk in the grass day ...

    barefooting life" (6 lines)

Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Modern Greek Literature. Can we share our opinions and offer some food for thought? PANTELHS PREBELAKHS NO 5?

This series of questions is posted in this Section and not in the Literature Section, because through these authors and their books one may visit many places in Greece, and thus prospective visitors who read them will also be able to better understand the areas and culture of their destinations.

    1. Which of his works have you read and which is your favourite? Why?

Mine would have to be "The Sun of Death" ("O Hlios toy Thanatoy"). Although it is some years since I first read this work, the pictures imprinted in my mind from his narrative have not ever faded. His love of Crete is very evident in the intricate detail of description of the countryside and all living things. One must but wonder if perhaps his characters were real people.

    2. Which of his characters in which book do you remember clearly, and why?

    3. What is your opinion of his writing style?

    4. Any thoughts about this writer and/or his work?

    5. For those who do not read Greek, his novels have been translated into English and most European languages. ISBN numbers, if available, would be helpful to would-be readers.

  • Modern Greek Literature. Can we share our opinions and offer some food for thought? A. KARKABITSA No. 3?

Now that the Christmas and New Year holidays have passed, perhaps you may care to continue with this category, which includes so many Greek authors who have made invaluable contributions to Greek Literature. Karkabitsa is an another excellent example.

    1. Which of his works have you read and which is your favourite?

May I suggest a volume of short stories, "Palies Agapes" (Old Loves). He has opened up windows, back through time, through which we may glimpse ways of life, topical myths, customs and mindsets in conjunction with historical events. How tragic is the story of Xrysh who is forced to become Xrysanto, and has to suppress her love for Dhmo?

    2. Which of his characters in which book do you remember clearly, and why?

    3. What is your opinion of his writing style?

    4. Any thoughts about this writer and/or his work?

    5. For those who do not read Greek, which of his books have been translated into other languages, and which languages? ISBN numbers, if available, could be helpful to would-be readers.

  • Modern Greek Literature. Can we share our opinions and offer some food for thought? STRATH MYRIBILH No. 1?

In an attempt to practise what I have been preaching and to realize an idea which keeps returning,

I shall attempt to produce a weekly question on some of the foremost modern Greek writers. (Not

in any order of greatness or preference). There has always been information posted about Ancient

Greek Literature, but I have not seen anything about Modern Works, which is an enormously rich

    category.

I hope that this will be a supplement to Music Mondays.

So, Strath Myribilh is the first on whom I hope we shall focus.

    1) This being the Greek Section: "Ap' thn Ellada" ("From Greece"): Which chapters express you best or are your favourites, and why?

Mine have to be the first chapters on Crete, Sfakia, and which mention our family. The historical pictures drawn are amazingly clear through his attention to description of detail.

    2) Which of his works have your read and which is your favourite? Why?

    3) Which of his characters in which book do you remember clearly, and why?

    4) What is your opinion of his writing style?

    5) Any thoughts about this writer and/or his work?

    6) For those who do not read Greek, which of his books have been translated into other languages,

and which languages. ISBN Numbers if available would be helpful to would-be readers.

  • Am I wrong to be upset about this?

I post this question in the Greek Section as I hope for advice from the

friendly Posters here, of similar temperament, who may understand my sense of disgust.

For those who do not know me well, I am a tolerant person, but never

of lies or cheating. (Cut off my arm but never lie to me.) I know

that forgiveness is required, but I always have to battle with it ...

Three days ago I posted an answer which I composed in its entirety.

It contained personal information about my home, garden, community

and included references to my Family. There was nothing included

from any outside source. It was a "green" question in Garden and

Landscape which indicated a personalized answer.

The next day I saw that my answer had been plagiarized by a "fellow" Poster (nine hours after my answer). The first paragraph had been changed and a couple of "I's" became "we" and a couple of lines replaced.

I had also referred to "petonia", a completely Greek term, and even this was copied. (As you will realize, only a Greek or a Corfiot would know what this is, and the Poster's avatar does not give the impression that this is the case).

Subsequently the Asker, who has the Answerer as a Contact, awarded

    Best Answer to the Answerer.

I duly reported the copy/paste answer and sent an email to Y. A. including all the above details.

When I first saw the "other" answer with all the description of my home

and personal information written as someone else's I really felt quite odd, as though there was a gap in my stomach. It felt like an

intruder had virtually crept in and stolen my identity. I have had

an answer stolen once before, but this time made me feel quite different.

For those who do not know me, the Best Answer is not an issue--I

have more than enough of those. I considered deleting my answer,

but did not want to destroy the evidence. Then I thought, "Why

should I?" as the anger began to kick in."Let everyone see that this Poster has plagiarized." Unfortunately, both of our answers now show the same time frame.

Two days have passed, and the stolen answer still stands.

I have not answered anything in any of my Best categories since, I

just have not had the heart ...

Probably, in hind sight, I should not have included personal information.

Am I over-reacting? How would you feel? What else can I do?

  • Can the information in the news bulletin about the boating tragedy in F. Y. R.O. M. really be true?

Greek television states that the boat that sank, with the terrible toll of fifteen dead

Bulgarian tourists, had been in commission since 1924, and that an

investigation is under way to determine if the number of passengers on

    board exceeded the regulation number.

  • How can I make my night-flowering Cereus branch without breaking it off?

I have one big Cereus which branches on its own, and another which

just keeps growing up--it is now about eight feet tall with no sign of a side-branch. Is breaking it the only solution? Also, "The Royal

Horticultural Garden Encyclopaedia" states that red fruits appear

after the flowers--mine have never done so, nor have others I have

seen--do the flowers need a special pollenator?
