How were the covalent bond angles determined, like for carbon, oxygen, etc.?

they were predicted by simple valence-shell electron repulsion theories. but how were they measured? that's another question. they were measured by combinations of microwave spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.
