Assuming you are changing the oil filter the crankcase in an 09 5.3 liter V-8 motor holds 6 quarts of oil.

Buying too much is fine. You only put in enough to fill to correct level. Buy 5 quarts. If it's on special, buy 6 quarts. The extra won't spoil in the bottle, but if you need to add some between oil changes, you'll have it.

Countryboy is right. The 5.3 liter uses 6.0 quarts including the filter.

when you go to the auto store they will tell you how much is needed and what type ( usually 5 - 7 quarts) and either 5W-40 or 10W-40.

    Should be 5 quarts.

I can assure you that the owners manual has a section devoted to that topic. Also, more info would be under specs & capacities.
