new car switching to synthetic oil?

how long should you wait before switching to synthetic oil? i know if you buy a new car, you should break it in with the OEM oil, which is probably conventional..., but how long until you can/should switch to synthetic?

There is always pros and cons to everything in life,

Synthetic oil is thinner in form of viscosity, therefore less friction and therefore providing better lubrication. It is also design to be tougher and able to cope with higher temp.

You must always check is your engine necessarily to use synthetic oil, if not then save the money and do a more regular oil change with normal oil.

For example if your oil change is 5000 km, then you can go for 3000km change with normal oil, This will give you more protection and cleaner oil compare to a 10000 km change with synthetic oil. Oil will always get dirty with carbons and metals from the engine. It is not about the oil, its about how regular you change it. Think about it.

Back to your question, you can always change it, no problem at all and you can always switch anytime, the choice is yours,

    Good Luck,

All conventional oils today are a blend with synthetic. You would have to special order a pure petroleum base oil. I would recommend using a name brand oil of the proper weight until you break it in. Check the owners manual. If it states to avoid towing or extreme speeds for a certain amount of time, then wait until that time before switching to pure synthetic. Synthetic will not break down as fast as regular oil, but it still gets dirty. Always change the oil and filter regularly, and you should get a few hundred thousand miles out of it.

Ok, I'm a parts guy at Pep Boys, which doesnt sound like much, I know, but try to do my own research, and I ask the Mechanics out in our shop if I don't know something, so here is the deal according to all that info. Basically if any car uses synthetic, and u switch back to mineral, it can cause some pretty bad leaks in the car. I'm not sure why scientifically, but I've seen it personally happen on at least 4 occasions, and I personally don't wanna take the chances. If ur car takes regular (mineral) oil, u can stick with it, but synthetic will provide u with superior protection.

most engines still have a break in time, which is the engine wearing and seating itself. the time it takes to do that is lengthened by using synthetic oils, HOWEVER that is because the engine wears slower and thus will still last longer. I typically do a regular oil change on the conventional at 3k and switch to synthetic.

repeated studies, even those done in the last 3 years, find that a good synthetic last longer and protects better than a good conventional oil. additionally, they often release a little more hp and mpg because of reduced friction. one test even found that a premium synthetic at 6k miles had the same lubricating value as pennsoil does when it's still in the bottle.

Any time you want to. I switch back and forth all the time between regular & synthetic oils. The trick is to change it when it is time to change it and keep it full. There is no reason you can not buy a brand new car, drain the oil and refill with synthetic oil (and change the filter). It would be a waste of oil and money, but you could do it. The engine will not get "use to" one or the other.

Synthetic is a waste of money. Back when synthetic was introduced conventional oil had an API service speck of SC/SD. The difference back then between the two oils was huge and you were getting a lot more for the extra money. Today's conventional oil has an API service spec of SM. This means todays oil is way ahead of where it was years ago. In my opinion the extra cost of synthetic is not worth it for normal driving. For extreme service by all means go for the synthetic.Just remember that there is not nearly the advantage in synthetics as there was years ago.

I never heard that once you start to use synthetic that you cant revert back to conventional; and i have been in this business 40+ years. I worked at dealerships, i still have friends in dealerships. The best rule of thumb is to wait to at least 10k before using synthetic. And yes you can switch back to conventional. You can mix conventional with synthetic as well. I have a new car now with 4k on it, once i reach 10k, my switch will be made to synthetic.

Good luck and do more research if still undecided.........

Cars don't rely on break in these days as much as they used to. In fact, a lot of engines don't require any break in anymore.

Also, don't assume your factory fill is conventional. In fact, if you get a luxury car, it is likely to be at least a synthetic blend if not a full synthetic.

You can right away. Just keep in mind once you go synthetic you can't go back, ever. Make sure you change the oil filter when you change to Synthetic.
