What does a truck driving school teach you?

You'll spend the first week learning what you need to know to pass the basic commercial driver's written test to get a learner's permit. You will also take a DOT physical to be sure you are medically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle.

Then you will spend the next three or four weeks in a truck, learning to maneuver a tractor and trailer in and out of tight spaces, backing up, parallel parking, dock backing, etc. You will also go out on the road with an instructor and learn how to drive on city streets and on the highway, shifting a truck transmission up and down, etc.

Once you are ready to take your practical test, you will go back to the DMV and drive with an inspector. If you pass your practical test, you will be issued a CDL and then you can go look for a job. Depending on the company you hire on with, you may spend another 4-6 weeks on the road driving with a company trainer to polish your skills and learn more about driving for your new employer.

If you survive this training program, you will be a fully qualified company driver. You will be assigned to a truck and you'll be ready to start your new career as a truck driver.
