I have always been a fan of the Sony Vaio. I've had mine for about two years now and it still works great. I've seen some great Vaios has different online stores at great prices. Also a good Vaio is one with a blu-ray player.

If you don't care about gaming, then the graphics card doesn't matter. Any of the integrated video chipsets can handle business and school use, so you'd go for whichever unit has the best CPU, RAM, and hard drive space for a good price.

Toshiba makes excellent general-purpose laptops, and are the most reliable in the industry, far better than HP.

Gateway has great prices but their reputation as a company (product quality, customer service, support etc) isn't as good.
