Atheists- should we be called "Etheists" to make it obvious we have ethical quality despite having no god?

It's just that some people seem to be missing that massive point - might a constant reminder be exactly what they need?

This shouldn't have to be pointed out. It should be obvious that ethics don't derive from an arbitrary portion of scripture.

I think it's been said...not all atheists are ethical. But the last thing we need is a splinter sect or sects of atheist thought. That's worked pretty well for the theists.

If you are an atheist you simply don't believe. If someone judges us as falsely unethical they are to blame. Even better, if they are christian...they are the ones casting stones and falsely judging. Let them sin a sin they presumably believe in. Let us laugh and more importantly, let us be.

    No.

It comes from the Greek a + theism, meaning not + believing in a higher power. Take off the "a" and you're just left with theism, which I'm sure quite a few atheists wouldn't want to be associated with.

Are you assuming all Atheists have ethical qualities simply because they do not believe in god?

If you are an atheist then what are you doing talking about ethics?

Ethics arise from morals, and for an evolutionist there is not absolute right or wrong. Just peoples opinions. And those opinions are not really opinions, they are the inevitable predefined result of millions of years of evolution. Your thoughts are just the result of chemical reactions, defined by millions of years of random chance.

If you tell me something is wrong then that's just your opinion. So if I disagree then who's to say whose opinion is the right one? It is an arbitrary choice.

The only reason that an atheist knows in his heart that some things are wrong (like me stealing your car), is by borrowing the idea of right and wrong from the Bible.

Atheism is not inherently ethical or unethical. Stalin was an atheist. Its a view that can't be pigeonholed into a value system, however, it can characterize one (secular humanism, communism, etc).

No, not really. Why should I have to explain to someone that I have ethical qualities? If they really knew me they wouldn't need an explanation.

  • No, since the prefix a- usually means "non" it makes more sense to still be called atheist.

If your qualities are not obvious in your actions, then by all means, advertise those qualities.

Don't hide your light under a bushel.

That's a really cool idea. But if we have to re-define words in order for the unenlightened to understand it, we're not doing anyone any good.
