Which should I do? Marines - Army?

I want to go into marines. I'm just trying to gather information. Please don't diss either. I respect all of our armed forces.

i"ll try not to diss the Marine Corps :D

I was stuck between this choice aswell.

If you want to learn how to swim/float the USMC is for you.

They're trained to shoot further at a larger, stationary target so you can take your time.

You may be stationed on a ship for months depending on your job

They are less funded than the Army and therefore recieves equipment of lesser quality. Usually Army hand me downs. Less funding generally means less training.

They have more Pride in being Marines than Soldiers have of being Soldiers.

They have the best enlisted dress uniform.

They have a great public relations campaign and seem to get the credit for pretty much anything thats a joint operation. They even teach Marines stuff like they were awarded for their actions in Belleau Woods, AND they wear the award even though it was the Army's 2nd Infantry Division, who were attached to them, that was awarded the foragee.

Some duty stations in the Army expect you to be able to swim when you get there and there will be a swimming evaluation... nothing happens if you fail(i did).

Army is trained to shoot only up to 300m. But its human silhouettes that pop up and down for a limited time. So you have to acquire the target, use the fundamentals of marksmanship, and hit it before it goes down. The targets range from 50-300m and stay up for 2-5 secs depending on the distance.

Depending on your job your initial training may be longer than usmc bootcamp

Army really doesnt instill Army pride. Instead they instill mos and unit pride. In OSUT we were taught we are better than other MOS'. You get to your unit and you're taught you're better than other units. The the smaller you break it down to you're taught yours is better than theirs. THe Marine Corps is more tightly knit. EX: I'm pretty sure it wasn't all marine regiments that got the name "Devil Dogs" yet they all use it. Various units in the Army have earned nicknames. Ex: the 25th ID earned the nickname "Tropic Lightning Division"(from the USMC) and the 27th INF earned the name "Wolfhounds" from the Russians, but you wont hear the rest of the Army using these nicknames. Rangers have higher esprit de corps than the rest of the infantry.

The thing I like about the USMC is that people usually dont join because they had no way to pay for college. Instead they infect the Army by joining for that reason.

Some soldiers make me proud to be a soldier and others it's like... "Man... get the **** out of my Army..."

In the Army there are more jobs, more opportunities, faster promotion. More military schools to go to. More Special Ops to choose from, longer deployments, different places you can get stationed(korea, italy, hawaii, NY, NC, Alaska, Texas, LA, etc)

I'm a little biased after being in the Army for so long - the Army is larger than the Marine Corps so you have the ability to move up more quickly in rank (more positions, more turn over) and there are more MOS's to choose from as well as more schools to attend. The down side to this is the Marine Corps has higher recruiting standards and generally gets a higher quality recruit - also since the Marines are smaller they have a higher esprit des corps than the Army (in general). just my two cents. you can't go wrong either way - serving is one of the best things I've done in my life.

It will depend on the operation but if it a sea launched strike it will probably be the Marine Corps. Marines are the Naval Infantry If you look at recent operations Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan you will see the Marine Corps lined up with the UN allies and the Army to take on certain stages Chetak

Well you have to compare your goals to the missions of the different services.

The Marine mission is designed around combat and combat support. Marines will be sent in on an invasion or campaign, then proceed to kill, blow-up, and dominate. Those Marines not directly related to that combat, are doing their jobs designed on aiding that combat team on the invasion.

The Army mission is designed around occupation and peace-keeping. The Army uses it's numbers to accomplish several objectives in several different missions. There are also a large amount of different jobs due to this large amount of objectives.

If you want to be a field force with different objectives, Army. If you want to be a combat field force, centralized on invasions, capturing, and destruction, or supporting the such, Marines.

Personally, I'm going to be attending college on an NROTC Scholarship graduating as a Marine Second Lieutenant.

If you like water than go into the marines if u like land more go into the army. Although marines do fight on land. I personally think if you want to experience more, meaning different jobs then join the army. But remember it really doesn't matter what you join as long as you fight for the U.S. then your doing a damn good job.
