    They are thriving actually, especially in such countries as Afghanistan, but they are present world wide. Further, you don't need a corrupt politician to spawn another. Greed is part of the human genome. It just take a little bit of temptation and anybody can cross the line and become corrupt. As the mafia knows from experience, practically anybody is corruptible. Those who are not corruptible can be intimated. Those who are not corruptible or intimidated are often the victims of murder and/or frame ups.
