Computer Science is a more general computer education and Computer Programming is more like engineering.

  • Computer Science (or information technology) is a more global concept covering all aspects of computers and IT. Computer programming is very specific to programming (coding, scripting, writing programs, etc.).

Basically, a computer science degree could lead to a career as an IT specialist, whereas Computer Programming could lead to a career at a software development firm. There is a lot of overlap, though. An IT student will learn a lot about programming, and a programming student will learn a lot about other aspects of computers. A programming course wouldn't deal much with systems/networks administration, technical support or graphics.

The computer science major curriculum is different for each school and so it isn't automatic but mostly CS programs are programming oriented. Computer science as a profession concerns itself with finding new algorithms to solve computational problems while programmers can range from code monkeys to software engineers.

I've never heard of a degree in computer programming but I am guessing that it is a very scaled down version of computer science. It probably has more to do with how to work with basic applications and probably only applies to Windows. This is just a guess.

Computer Science involves writing and creating code.

Computer programming is something you can choose to focus your studys on under a Computer Science major. Computer science majors are anything application based.
