Help! Puppy potty question for the first time puppy owner!?

I just got my puppy yesterday. I'm a first time dog owner. (I have a Shih Tzu puppy)

Now, we already have the essentials.

1. Crate (But i think it's too big)

2. Dog food/vitamins/treats

3. Bowl/The drinky thingy hamsters use

4. Toys

5. Collar and leash

He's only 3 months old. Since he was bought from a pet store, he's used to going potty in his crate.

How can I stop this? I don't have a large garden. Just a really small one which is smaller than a regular carpet and is FULL of potted plants. I'm trying to make him go potty outdoors (But I'm not sure because he's not fully vaccinated yet). So I'm thinking of letting him go potty by the gate at the porch.

That's another problem, I'm scared he'll run out the gate and I can't use a leash because he won't move and will keep biting on his leash. The leash also keeps going under his paws and I have to help him.

So basically, my questions are :

1. How do I get him to stop going potty in his crate

2. How do I get him to pee outside by the gate

I'm also scared the porch floor will be too hot for his paws. Thanks in advance.

    lol aw puppy problems

    1) most (and I stress most) puppies will stop going to the bathroom when there's only enough room in their crate for them to turn around (no play room, just turn around and lay down that's it) if a crate is too big you can usually put cardboard boxes in the back of it to take up some room.

    A) Do not give them any food or water while in their crate, they aren't experienced enough at holding so they will not be able to wait to be let out if it's in there with them.

    B) After he eats or drinks usually (it varies just watch for patter) 20- 40 minutes later they will have to go outside.

    2) if they are not too experienced with leashes the best thing is to get a slip lesh (really cheap usually your vet will give these to you) and instead of just putting it around their neck you put it behind one front leg and the neck that way when you try to get them to walk you're not just tugging on their neck but their whole body, it will also help with the problem of it getting hung under his feet.

    A) if you're afraid of taking him outside because of his vacs you can dilute some bleach and spray in in a particular area this will kill anything even Parvo and he'll be good even without all his vacs

I hope this helps if there are any other problems ask lol

No dog should be crated for 8 straight hours, and expecting a dog under 1 year to hold it's bladder for more than a couple hours is ridiculous and cruel. The crate should never be used for discipline of any sort and is not a place to potty, it is a place to be comfortable and happy where the dog does not WISH to potty until it is let out to do so in the yard. Crate training should begin with 1 hour intervals (30 minutes if dog is less than 12 weeks) and every interval should end with a potty break and a reward for not having an accident. Crate training is by far the fastest and easiest method of potty training. I advise you to have your owners find a book or website to help them. The crate needs to be place in a family area, given blankets and toys to make it comfy, and used at appropriate intervals for potty training only. Letting the dog run around the house until it has an accident and then locking it up is not the purpose of crate training. You should advise them that if they continue to misuse the crate, the dog will learn nothing but fear and they will miss the window of potty training altogether and the dog may never fully learn.

    Crate size should be:

Big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around and lie down without touching the corners.

if it is any bigger he will potty in his crate

DO NOT LEAVE FOOD IN THE CRATE, this gives your dog more chances to go potty

Leash training, start now and leave the leash on him when he is in the house, he needs to get accustomed to having an extra piece attached once he is Comfy, time to take him outside with it... bring treats, when he goes potty, say "good potty" and when he is done say "yes" and give him a treat

Since you are a first time pet owner I would recommend training though PetsMart only because the classes are set up for first time owners and will have a lot of information. Make sure to talk to the trainers, because they can give you special deals on pricing as well!

If his crate is too big you need to get a smaller one or modify the big one. It should only have enough room to comfortably lay down and turn around. Dogs won't sleep in their own waste so in theory if he doesn't have enough room to go and then get away from it he won't go. But remember he's a baby and a small breed so his bladder is tiny and can't hold to much. He'll need to go out quite often. As for the gate just keep taking him there and praising him when he does his job. It'll take awhile but eventually he'll get it.

when he's not in his crate take him out every hour (cookies in pocket) try to keep the leash on him in the house too while in training (except when he's in the crate) when u take him out bring him to the same spot and tell him to do potty and when he does praise him up and down and give the cookie (always give the cookie outside) if your scared of the porch floor carry him out. if you see him getting ready to go to the bathroom in the house just pick him up and run to the same spot in the yard you want him to go to and tell him do potty. he will learn very fast this way

There are pheromones available in many pet stores that when sprayed where you want your dog to go, it will entice them to eliminate there. Also try moving the crate towards the door/area closest to where you want him to go. Use training pads, newspaper etc to get him to go on it. and move that closer and closer. Its a longer process but he will learn when given time.

I just got a puppy and you should limit its food and water before you put it away, and right after he eats, take it outside to use the bathroom and then put it away.
