What is the difference between Mercy Corps & Peace Corps?

I as a Peace Corps Volunteer years ago. My daughter is one today. I just read a couple of pages of the Mercy Corps' web site, so I'm no expert.

The Peace Corps is an agency of the US Government. It typically takes bright college graduates with a desire to see one small part of the world really really well, gives them 3 months of training and sets them to teaching in an upriver school for two years. PCVs also do health education, farm advising and other things. Their web site has a much more comprehensive list. It is is graphics-heavy, though:

The Mercy Corps is a non-profit development organization. It looks to me like they don't take volunteers. They hire much more experienced people. They offer unpaid internships - you'd pay for your own living expenses. The Peace Corps pays you a living allowance. Here is a list of MC jobs, to give you an idea:

It looks like they hire as many locals as they can. That helps in two ways; first, it gives a local person a job; second, they save on air fare.
