Any good Free 3D modeling software?

I am new to 3D modeling, and am not in any classes for it, I think of it as fun, not work. As of now I have blender, it is by far one of the best 3D modeling software out there, and it is free, the only bad thing is it is made for people who know what they are doing, and have some background I can only do some very basic in it, and I would like something more basic to start out in. I want somthing that I can make 3D models of people/animals not of buildings.

Thanks very much

Update:

I new someone was going to say google sketchup 7, and not that I do not like that of buildings, but or organic objects I need something a little better.

*EDIT* Oops, I did not read your entire message - apologies for that; you already tried Blender. So many people on Yahoo Answers asking the same questions over and over again... ;-)

It is a bit of a conundrum - modeling characters and animals is quite complex, no matter what 3d software you use. One thing you could try is downloading DazStudio, which is far easier to use, but only works with prebuild content. And that content costs a bit of $$, unfortunately.

It is a good starting point, though, especially if you do not want to put the effort and time in learning a 'proper' 3d package, such as Blender, and want instant results. Lots of people make beautiful art with just DazStudio. Enough free content is available on the net - just look for Poser characters and models.

To create your own characters "MakeHuman" comes into play - very easy to use, but not completely finished yet.

Although in alpha stage, you can export the posed models into Blender or DazStudio, and add lighting, an environment, and so on. This free program truly is the simplest method to make human models yourself.

Hope this helps a bit - Blender 3d still IS the best option for ultimate control. Yes, you are correct in saying that it is complex (an any 3d app would be) - that being said, the basics aren't too bad. Good teaching materials can be found at:

If your going for a trial, try Maya, it may be a bit advanced, id suggest researching modeling with primitives and meshes for starters, it's really not as complicated as it's put out to be, just loaded with tons of tools and features. I've heard good things about Google Sketchup for very basic stuff, I think it's free.

    Blender; $0 or $10/month

As a hobbyist, freelancer, or small to medium sized studio you can use Blender as a low-cost alternative to Maya ($125/month), ZBrush ($800), and After Effects ($20/month).
