My dog keeps scratching herself?

She's scratching so much, her skin is pink & fur is thinning on her underside (chest and sides) and she has scabs on top of her head.

She doesn't have fleas or ticks. Her skin overall isn't dry. Her fur is kind of coarse but it usually is that way.

Two summers ago, her ears became scabbed and peels (told is was sun spots or heat spots???). I don't know if that's related to what is going on now or not.

She's a 5 yr old short haired Chihuahua. No new changes to her bedding, food and no stress.

I tried bathing her with dog shampoo for dry itchy skin but she started scratching after I dried her off.

Anyone know what's going on? I can't afford a vet appt right now.

Update:

Also we have her daughter with her who doesn't seem to have this problem. It's just the mother.

Update 2:

I've had her on purina dog food since she was 2 months old (I still give her puppy chow ~ small bits due to her and her 1 yr old daughter's size - 2 and 3 lbs). She was born in March 2004. This itching thing began 2 summers ago (only on her ears) with hot spots. It went away and until 2 months ago, was itch free. Now she's itching non stop.

My grandma had a dog with mange. I'm wondering if that's what it is. Her dog got it at 1 yr so I don't understand why my dog would get it after all this time. They aren't around other dogs. They are indoors 24/7 and have been for 1 1/2 months now (they're pad trained).

could be some food allergy. try her on limited ingredients natural balance lamb and rice. she may have a thyroid problem, that could cause itching. when my dog started scratching with no obvious cause, I sprayed solercaine on. sometimes dogs just get into a bad habit. My friend had a bishon that got 'hot spots' she used aloe vera spray and that helped.

Sounds more like an allergy problem. I would try giving her children's liquid benydryl- 1/2 to 1 mg per pound of weight. A plunge syringe used for infants helps administer the dose. My dogs actually enjoy the cherry flavored liquid so it's not too much of a struggle to get them to take it. I would also buy some spray or cream for hotspots. It will help relieve her itchy skin. Allergies usually come from contact with outdoor triggers- anything from pollen and mold spores to the lawn fertilizer treatment of a neighbors yard. If you can, try and track when it seems to get worse- if it's during prime allergy seasons that that may be an indication that the basis of her scratching is allergies!

it sounds like a hot spot..its just a spot wheres shes become excessively ithcy and theres really no reason for it but there are ointments that you can buy at your local pet store and there are many different kinds from sprays to creams u may have to test on her to see which ones work best for her.. and theres no point getting a cone because a cone is only meant to avoid the dog from licking herself or scratching her face.. I also sont think it is at all related to her previous issue with her ears. Best of luck!

Probably a skin irritation or disease, some dogs are just very sensitive to something very certain. Vet check is very important, slight chance it's some type of mange.

  • My Shih Tzu does pretty much the same thing. I got him some new food that was supposed to help with the problem from Pet Smart, and it seemed to help.

It sounds like allergies. I took my yorkie to the vet for the same thing and i was told that she has allergies. They gave me some meds there but you may be able to give her some benadryl.

get her a cone immediately, so she can't reach it.
