What exactly is considered land-line phone service?

Of course I know all the old Ma Bell services with the phone jack thing are land-lines. But what about the phone service in a company's "bundled services"?

Without naming names..... a popular communication company that bundles cable TV, internet, and phone - is that type of phone considered a land-line? I thought it was the same as VOIP since it's on a phone modem but my friend says no since it also has the same old phone jack thing - that that is what qualifies it as a land-line.

Anybody know for sure? Thx!

landline = POTS (plain old telephone service) which is from the local bell company, sent over a twisted pair from the telephone companies central office to your home...

some landline carriers (such as verizon) offer bundled packages of land line service, DSL and satellite television from directv... so just because it is bundled service does not disqualify it from being land line...

telephone service offered by cable companies, is not land-line service in the traditional sense... but neither is it true VoIP..... (same goes for telephone service thru verizon fios or att uverse)

just because you have an analog telephone jack does not qualify a service as landline service... most VoIP providers offer ATA devices which will convert the VoIP signal into an analog telephone signal for use with your existing telephone equiptment...

land-line is a permanent connection. As such, VoIP is not landline, since if the power goes out, so does the phone service. Not a big deal nowadays in the age of cell phones with batteries. But regardless. If you have standard phone service, not VoIP through a cable or internet provider, your phone will work with no power (Assuming you're using a standard wired phone).

That is a land-line in it's truest form.

like the others have said its a phone in your home that uses the jack in the wall that has access to the phone lines outside. It can be corded or cordless but NOT your cell phone. I still like using a regular phone for most calls especially long calls or more private calls. A corded phone is super annoying but its still good to have stored in the closet somewhere in case of a power outage. Your cell will only work for so long till it needs to be recharged and cordless phones requilre an electrical outlet. Also some medical devices (like heart monitors) require a corded landline phone in the home to send the device info to your doctor

Unfortunately no longer are there such things as POTS. For a better understanding you can navigate to the sources I have provided here. The fact of the matter is that all communication now takes place over digitized signals processed over fiber optics and/or wireless transceiver systems. You may have physical wires coming into an establishment or home, but eventually all information is processed at a system switch that converts over to fiber optics for packeted digitized transmission to other points and then converted back to be sent over the twisted pairs and/or wireless transceivers in any combination. So in essence no matter which form of communication that is used, none of them are true old fashioned POTS. Even signals from your home to a local routing multiplexer terminal are being sent on a shared twisted pair of wires using a digital line decoder because in most cases there aren't enough pairs of wires to go around. That little network interface outside your home may have more that one set of wires coming into it, and you have two distinct phone numbers, but in reality unless you have paid extra for it, there will only be one active set and digital decoding device at your home and in the neighbor terminal on the single pair to separate the two lines' signals. Yes in the days past there were dedicated twisted pairs for each distinct phone number but as the cost of labor and materials has grown along with the high demands, technology had to change to keep pace. Thus we enter the age of digital processing.

By definition a "land line" phone system is a conventional or non-wireless connection type system.

A landline (or land line) was originally an overland telegraph wire, as opposed to an undersea cable. Currently, landline (or main line or fixed-line) refers to a telephone line which travels through a solid medium, either metal wire or optical fibre, as distinguished from a mobile cellular line, where transmission is via radio waves.

A fixed phone line (a line that is not a mobile phone line) can be hard-wired or wireless.

Fixed wireless refers to the operation of wireless devices or systems in fixed locations such as homes and offices. Fixed wireless devices usually derive their electrical power from the utility mains electricity, unlike mobile wireless or portable wireless which tend to be battery-powered. Although mobile and portable systems can be used in fixed locations, efficiency and bandwidth are compromised compared with fixed systems. Mobile or portable, battery-powered wireless systems can serve as emergency backups for fixed systems in case of a power blackout or natural disaster.

The technology for wireless connection to the Internet is as old as the Net itself. Amateur radio operators began "patching" into telephone lines with fixed, mobile, and portable two-way voice radios in the middle of the 20th Century. A wireless modem works something like an amateur-radio "phone patch," except faster. High-end fixed wireless employs broadband modems that bypass the telephone system and offer Internet access hundreds of times faster than twisted-pair hard-wired connections or cell-phone modems.

Any phone that you cannot travel with is a land line phone (i.e house phone, office phone, even some car phones....if it must be hooked to a base then it is land line....)

this phone would be considered land-line, basically any phone that is not a cell phone would be a land line.
