Who does Robert E. Lee describe as "devil's hand maiden (servant)" ?

Robert E. Lee describes someone as "devil's hand maiden". Does anyone know who he's describing?

I think he wrote this in a letter and I think he's talking about a male but i'm not sure about that stuff...

    I couldn't find anything relating to the Devil's Hand Maiden but he was very much opposed to the way a man's integrity and virtue was altered by alcohol. Maybe that's what it refers to. You can find reference to that amongst his quotes, http://www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/Notable...

    He wrote "The Devil's name is dullness" but i don't know about a hand maiden.
