How do I prevent nightmares for one night?

I'm 11 years old and I just read a scary book. I didn't think that it would affect me, but I don't want to go to sleep now because I'm afraid that I'll have nightmares. I don't usually have nightmares, but tonight I think I might. Will it help if I stay up late so that I'm tired when I go to bed?

Thanks!

No matter what you do to prevent having a nightmare you will still have some thoughts from that book included in your dreams. I would suggest watching a very powerful positive movie to even the dream out.

You probably won't need this, but you might feel better if you have a copy of it.

Psychologists invented a method to help people who have trouble with nightmares because of terrible things like war and plane crashes. It's very simple, but it works. You take the scary things of the nightmares and use them to write a story with a happy ending. For example, if you wake up when Dracula is getting out of his coffin, you can write a different ending to the dream in which you find a machine gun to shoot him with. Then you "rehearse" the dream in your imagination while you're relaxed, over and over. To do this, you should have a good relaxation method. Many people like slow, deep breathing and imagining a nice place like a warm, sandy beach.

As I said, it works. There's an article below about the evidence.

read or watch something to refocus your thoughts and don't stress about having a nightmare that just makes it more likely you'll have one. if you start thinking about the book again before you go to bed then maybe put on a radio and only think about whats playing until you fall asleep. sweet dreams

first if you stay up late its more likely to have nightmares. after i watch a scary movie or read something scary and think it might affect me i just face it. you are in control of your mind you need to know that if something scary pops up imagine you beating it up. if you watch scary movie 1,2,3,and 4 itll be easy.

i recommend you do something that makes you forgeet about all the scary stuff by thinking of something else. watch funny stuff or a good show after you sleep and think only about that.

Read something comforting or positive now.
