Why is it that tomboys are often though of as being gay?

I have been privileged enough to know quite a few tomboys over the years, one of them is my sister. Without fail at one time or another each one of them has been subjected to bullying and rumour about being lesbian. While one tomboy is actually gay and living with her girlfriend now the others are not. One is engaged to a nice man, another is getting into dating guys and my sister has been in a long term relationship with a guy for over two years now. So why is it that tomboys are considered to be and dismissed as being gay?

because people who are gay sometimes exhibit behaviors our society associates with the opposite sex. I say sometimes because some people believe this happens all the time but this is not the case. Also a lot of guys are intimidated by a girl who is better at sports than they are. This is an example of sexism. For girls calling girls these names, it's usually jealousy or ignorance. The truth is there is a big difference between being a tom boy and being gay. There are lots of women who are gay and may cut thier hair shorter or refuse to wear dresses. This is not necessarily tom boyish behavior. Tom boys are girls who enjoy and excel at activities normally associated with the male role in society.

People just need to stop being so sexist.

Well usually people just wonder in their minds, "huh... I wonder if she's a lesbian?" Because you have to admit, there are quite alot of girls who are tomboys that are lesbians, while others aren't. Like my sister! My sister is pretty tomboyish but she isn't gay. She questioned her sexuality at one point, but she concluded that she wasn't. You just can't stop ignorant people from jumping to conclusions and generalizing.

I am a tomboy and i dont dress girly and people always trying to say i am gay and because they dont see me hugged up and all kissy kissy with a guy and it drive me nuts. but i am not gay i just try to ignore them cause i know what my sexual orientation is. Where i am from is like some invisible law or something that girls should always dress up and wear heels and be feminine or Something is wrong with you or you down right gay, which i think is stupid. and i guess since tomboys dont fit or abide by that they single us out as gay but i know some girls who are gay and they are the real girly frill dress wearing type of girls which i dont understand that idk.

because a tomboy is a girl that acts like a guy and a lesbian is a girl that acts like a guy

because it's not conventional. There are guys who like to label girls as lesbian because she has enough self esteem not to kowtow or run after him and shouting "yoo hoo" all the time.

cause they are girls that act like boys, and lesbians usually have a bit of boyishness to them.
