A diversion for the reptile people...?

Just to add a bit of spice to the section and take a break from the typical onslaught of care questions, I figured I'd put together a who's who of sorts and see who knows who these people are and what they're known for in the world of reptiles... (some of these may be pretty obscure, and really, I don't expect anyone to get all of them, but hey, who knows, I might be surprised.)

1) Ross Allen

2) George Van Horn

3) Bill and Kathy Love

4) Edwin Froelich

5) Peter Pritchard

6) Bill Haast

(Bah, there were others I was thinking of, but this is what I get for waiting an hour or so between thinking of a question and posting it... I'll probably be adding to this list)

Good luck.

Update:

So far so good, everyone, just as a side note, while many of these people have probably been mentioned in (or may have even written articles in) Reptiles magazine, others were doing their thing long before the magazine hit the presses, and I know of one for certain who probably has never picked up an issue of it in his life.

Dion:

George sure is starting to look snakeish since that last bite, isn't he? I haven't seen him in a few years, and I'm not sure he'd recognize me... well... maybe he might if I were to get my hair back to the color it was back then and try to make myself look like a kid again... we took him a lot of snakes over the years...

Update 2:

Useless tidbit to file under Ross Allen:

He was one of Johnny Weissmuller's stunt doubles when it came to wrestling crocodilians (go ask your parents if you don't know who Johnny was), and those oh-so-memorable underwater "croc" wrestling scense started as a complete accident... he was crossing the diving platform and somehow slipped, falling in the water and landing on one of the large alligators being used in filming... of course when you find yourself on top of a large gator, the only thing you can really do is hold on tight and pray... just so happened that a camera was rolling when all this went down, and when Ross finally managed to get into shallow enough water with the gator to let go of it, the director basically said "That was great, can you do it again so we can get another angle?"

Update 3:

Refer to Oikos for most of these

1) Ross Allen - already added all I felt I had to on this one.

2) George Van Horn - Curator of Reptile World Serpentarium in St. Cloud, Fl, large supplier of venom for antivenin and medical research.

3) Bill and Kathy Love - just wanted to add that they were also some of the first people to breed all those pretty corn snake designs everyone loves so much.

4) Edwin Froelich - Probably the most obscure of the bunch... he was the first person to breed alligators in captivity, making him responsible for the recovery of the species in a way... Florida FWC said that there was no way that alligators would breed in captivity and refused permission for him to attempt it... basically he broke the law, but they forgave him after he proved success.

5) Peter Pritchard - tidbit: got a pretty bad bite listening to his own information... those giant softshells in India do ~not~ always stay in their burrows with their tail end out.

6) Bill Haast

    1) Ross Allen founded the reptile institute in or around Silver Springs. It is mostly a tourist attraction but he did hire Neill to do some research there.

    2) Sorry, no idea

    3) Photographers and writers, mostly of popular herp articles and books.

    4) Strike 2

    5) Incredibly tall turtle specialist who works (or worked) for the Audubon Society. Wrote a precursor to his Encyclopedia of Turtles that was butchered by the editors. His later E of T was much better handled.

    6) Only person I have ever known to name a child after a venomous snake. I must admit that, aside from the derivation, Jaja is a pretty name. Bill's Serpentarium is a source of venom and his blood has been volunteered for use as antivenin. He injected himself with small amounts of venom (mostly cobra) to build up his tolerance because he was getting bitten so often.

I know who all of them are except Edwin Froelich.

I have met George Van Horn and Peter Pritchard, and I have known the Loves personally for many years, and have been a guest in their home.

The people on your list are the folks that write for Reptiles Magazine. Each one has their own specialized experience in the herpetology field. Kathy Love breeds corn snakes and her husband Bill, is also in on it too but, also does alot of camera work for Reptiles Magazine
