I crate trained my puppy and I would introduce her to the crate slowly, and the most important thing is if she is whining and she has went to the bathroom within the last half hour do not let her out. When the dog stops crying let her out.

The only time my dogs are crated is at night and when I leave the house. I took my puppy out to the bathroom around once every hour or so in the beginning after about a month I started lengthening the time and if she had an accident I knew I waited too long. She is 6 months now and I wait about two hours before I take her out.

Make sure not to feed her close to bed time or she will have to go poop in the middle of the night.

Using the crate method is one of the most successful methods of house-training. The basic method will be as follows:

Dog in cage unless directly supervised.

    In cage at night.

Upon rising, let out and give treat for good deeds.

    Feed, let out again, treat.

You can play with dog or put back in the cage,

Play on tile surface and watch while playing. Play for only the amount of time the dog can hold it. If it is only for 10 minutes, then do not allow out for more than that amount of time. A 5 month old pup may hold it longer, but you need to be very watchful and never let it out longer than that time. I would say 20 minutes might be the max for an untrained pup.

After play, let out, again, treat, and put in cage.

This is the method. Soon, the pup learns that it gets a treat each time it goes OUTSIDE, and also learns that it doesn't seem to be going inside. This is conditioning for the dog. If it makes a mistake, this means you left it out of the cage for too long, and YOU won't be doing that, again. Pick the duty up with paper towel, put it outside and gently show pup. Say, "Good dogs go OUT". Make no more of it. You can get books about this subject. To answer you question: She needs to be in the crate when not directly supervised. This reinforces the whole: Oh, look, I have not done any poopies or peeps in the house!! I guess that is how it is supposed to be.

At that age it is safest for pup to be crated overnight and when you are gone - not more than 4 hours at a time. When she is much older you can change the plan.

Pup should get to pee before going to bed, as soon as she hears you up in the morning and eveery 4 hours during the day.

Your question shows a good owner.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://tr.im/xtop4

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tr.im/trainadog

People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners

It sort of depends on the breed of dog. If it is a larger breed, I think they can hold their pee longer. I got my pup at 3 months and he always slept through the night without having to go potty. You should always crate her when you are not at home to supervise her and at bedtime. I would say your dog should be able to hold it at least 6 hours during the day. Take the water up one hour before bedtime and have her potty before bed.

Let her out to pee every two or so hours. Maybe she will not need to be crated at night, But definately while you are gone. See how quickly she becomes housetrained.

Crate training is not training. Being left in a cage teaches your dog nothing.
