I want to know what happens AFTER the DoD denies my secret security clearance application?

I have recruit training 2010 01 21 with the Navy. My current MEPS contract has me at E-1 and listed as an IT set for Pensacola A school after recruit training is completed. IT is said to be a secret security clearance and I have probably 8 different debts totalling 5000 dollars in total that when I was at MEPS I never put on the SF-86. I'm going to change that with my recruiter and file it with the correct debt info on it, but I will most likely be denied clearance anyway. I want to know what happens AFTER the DoD denies my secret security clearance application? Also what if I'm already at A school when the clearance is denied? Do I get to choose something else? I know I've asked a couple questions like this but I'm very concerned and the recruiter seems to be only trying to find the easiest way to get me in and then his hands are clean. Any recruiters or other service members have any idea what my options will be? Thank you in advance.

I filed for bankruptcy a few years before I joined and I had no problem getting a secret let alone a top secret. So I wouldn't worry. And 5 grand in debt is pennies compared to what the majority of Americans carry. But to answer your question, if you should happen to get denied yes you have to get a job that does not require a secret clearance or an assignment in your field that only requires a confidential or lower clearance. But that will limit your promotion and assignment possibilities in the future.

Im not sure with the navy what happends but i can tell you what happens in the army. If and when your security clearance gets denied this is what is going to happen. You wont even start the initial investigation until you hit bootcamp and at that time the invesigators will meet with you and go over your debt. upon that time you will go to ait and everything. comming back from ait or even sooner the DOD Clearence investation dept will send your unit at the time an e-mail and some paperwork going over why your clearence is about to be denied. At that time you will have to gather paper work, reguarding your debt, if you have tried to pay back your debt, why your debt is there good reasons or bad reasons on your part. you will then file the paperwork back and wait to hear from them. NOW!! if it gets denied you will lose your MOS job, and you will be required to pick a new MOS job thats available. If you cannot find one that you like then there are 2 options. Take one of the ones that doesn't need that specifc clearence or no clearance at all. or get discharged from the military.

Just so you know you can always REAPPLY for your clearance that wasn't given to you if you straighten out your debt situation at a later time in which case it may be granted to you then. I had alot of medical debt on my credit we are talking a large sum and i still got my secret clearance. I wouldnt worry about it to much. The thing that I would worry about is the fact you lied on your application about your debt when you joined. and that may be a Fradulent enlistment in which case your screwed so get that paperwork changed ASAP!

Having debt is probably not going to deny you a Secret clearance. It may a Top Secret, but not just a Secret. And even for that small amount of debt, it may not even matter with Top Secret clearance.

What happens if you need a particular clearance but you can't get it? You don't get your A School, and you would go to the fleet as a non-designated striker, and work in Deck Department.

Let me ask you a question: Are you making at least the minimum payments? If so, you will not have a problem getting a Secret clearance.

Its when people don't make payments, etc, the trouble starts.

You probably will not be required to get a top secret security clearance. Only certain people need those. If you need a secret security clearance and you cannot get one in an expidated fashion, you will be held over at your Basic or elsewhere (AIT, airborne school)until you are given the clearance. If you are flat-out denied, then you may have to pick another MOS. Your choices will not be as extensive as they would be if you were int he recruiter's office. This is because they will not let you wait around for an MOS that doesn't start AIT for several months. You will just have to chose from what is available at the time. If you were born in this country to American-born citizens, and you have no criminal record, then you will propably not be denied, and the process probably will not be delayed.

one of three things: you will be allowed to pick a new rating, you will be told what your new rating is with no input, or you will be discharged.

as long as you get the stuff corrected/listed on your SF86, option #3 most likely will not happen.
