what would be the opropriate greeting to leave on my japanese friends myspace. we dont know eachother that well so it has to be formal but i didnt know if konichiwa would be okay

Ogenki desuka? = Are you well? -> How are you?
Hajimemashite = Nice to meet you for the first time.
I actually think Konnichiwa is appropriate, too.

If this is your first time contacting them, I would say:
Hajime mashite. Konichiwa. Ogenki desuka?
Hi, how are you?
The hajime mashite roughly translates to "Hello for the first time".
