What type of System & Programming language do i need?

Im thinking of programming a software application which will be mainly used in the car.

Anyway obviously it becomes a problem putting a computer into every car using it... so what should i use instead? And, what language would work on this custom box which will also work on computer?

Hope im making sense..

More of what im asking is..

What language can i use today, which i can use and debug on computers... But will easily be able to be converted to be used on a custom piece of technology later.

    I believe there are three major bodies of code used in cars, ISaGRAF, C and assembler. Which you pick would depend on your application, however C will be the most portable between a development machine and hardware.
