Sometimes I buy a DVD that will not play. Are there different types of DVDs for certain kinds of players?

There are different regions. US is region one and plays on any computer's optical drive though only on players specified for that region. If you're buying the correct region and they still don't play, they're either defective or your player isn't functioning properly.
