my cousin was breaking into the record biz in the late 90s with a Boyz II Men type group, and he told me the same thing after he and the rest of his group met with various reps from Arista. The first album is pretty much what the studeio wants you to do and if you sell a lot of CDs then your subsequent CDs are what you wanna do. I've heard Pink and other singers pretty much say the same thing, so I think its true.

Bands like U2 and Bon Jovi (for example) are allowed to do whatever they want, because they're established acts and they're guaranteed to sell because of their large fan bases. For any artist below that level of success, the record company has a lot more control than most people think. They put out what they think will sell. It's usually written into a band's contract.

No, because the record company has the right to reject the album. It's just another business that is there to make money.

That recently happened to Amy Winehouse.
