Root Canal vs Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

Which hurts less?

I am getting my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday, and I want to know if it's less painful than a root canal. I hear root canals can make grown men cry. Will a wisdom teeth extraction be the same?

Well maybe 20 years ago a root canal may have made a grown man cry but with modern day technology and anesthesia pain is no longer an issue with root canal procedures. Modern day root canals after lidocaine and nitrous gas are no longer painful trust me I have performed a few during the past couple of weeks as part of my clinic duty and do not worry. As for extraction which tends to be more painful but depending on dentist extraction may be a better idea talk to your dentist.

    Hope this helps,

    3rd Year Dental Student

    Barry,

I do appreciate your response and you are right about some dentist failing to get all of the nerve, with modern dentistry that is quite hard to do though and most dentist swill use the x-ray, files. and a machine to double and triple check the length of the canals to make sure they remove every bit of nerve and while even though not even that is 100% accurate more than 80% of most root canals are successful and yes there can be some lingering pain afterwords but that does not usually last. Seeing an endodontist otherwise known as a root canal specialist, usually costs more, but has a higher success rate and less chance that any part of the nerve is left in the tooth. Also experienced dentist will usually do the same quality job as any endodontist.

It's going to smart some after the Novocaine wears off.

The 3rd year Dental Student didn't take under consideration that Dentists sometimes go right through the root tip, or mpss some nerve and leave it in by mistake, that would cause pain.

Root canals are painful, just not right when they do it. Even though the tooth will be dead (non vital), the tissue and bone can be traumatized. People would be surprised if they knew how many Dentists leave some nerve accidently.

If you have a lot of room for wisdom teeth, let them grow in. It's very uncomfortable, but you might be glad to have those teeth later on in life. If you don't have plenty of room for them, they need to come out.

A root canal wouldn't help anyways,, unless you count the Dentist. He will be using your wallet pocket for leverage.

I have had both done and the root canal is a piece of cake as long as you have zero infection in there. Having teeth pulled it no picnic and being a wisdom tooth not fun. It really depends on whether the roots have split, whether it is impacted, or even wrapped and grown around the bone. Many things factor in on the pain you might feel. Some people have a high tolerance for pain and others don't.

I think you will just have to see for yourself. I have had 2 root canals done and never had pain with them.

There are many variables. If you have a bacterial infection in the root of your tooth the numbing agent won't work, and yes it is astonishingly painful. If the root is not infected than it shouldn't hurt at all if you have a good dentist. Wisdom teeth if impacted can be painful. If you have the choice go with valium sedation. It works well. The degree of impaction will dictate how you feel afterwards. If they just come right out, you'll feel it for a couple of days. If you have to get surgical on them its going to hurt like hell for as long as two weeks. If you get a dry socket( your dentist should tell you what they are and how to avoid them) you will learn things about pain you never thought could be possible. Good luck.

I would say it all depends. Root canals should not cause that amount of pain. then dentists are not numbing people correctly.

For me wisdom teeth surgery was not very painful at all.
